Hi All,
We were REALLY pleased with how the boys performed in their first day of hitting yesterday. I’m sure there are a few with bumps and bruises. They hit hard! If they could take a hit and get up, they did well yesterday. There are a few really big hitters on this team. And no one stayed on the ground – that’s some tough kids!
Four tackling keys (for you to work on form-tackling with your boys at home):
1- Head-up (you can’t hit what you can’t see. And just slightly less important ;) – they can break their necks if they put their heads down)
2- Butt-down (low enough that the head is “numbers” high on the person they are tackling)
3- Stay on your feet (if you run into someone and drive through them, they will naturally fall. ~70% of the time, leaving your feet means that you will not make the tackle)
4- It hurts less when you hit hard (if you shy-away from the hit, it will hurt more)
Homework assignments:
- The backs & receivers need to memorize the holes & the passing tree. It is hard to have them run patterns or run the ball if they don’t know where to go!
- The Lineman need to memorize the holes. I will be sending home some simplified blocking rules for them. They should go over this and memorize their assignments.
